PYRAMID OF MAY.

From 1811, it is our first national monument in Buenos Aires.

The pyramid of May is the first national monument of Buenos Aires. It was created in Plaza de Mayo in honor of the first anniversary of our declaration of independence.

But the pyramid not always look the same, it was made in 1811 with 500 bricks and it became a hollow monument of only13 meters high.

At first the monument was called the “Altar of Liberation”.

1 – In its upper part is the Statue of Liberty (work of the French Joseph Duburdieu), or you can call it also Statue of the Republic, which in principle, belonged to the old theater Colon located where today is the National Bank in May Square.

2 – They guarded in its four corners other statues that today are no longer there. In deed, the first ones deteriorated. Then they put other 4 other statues in their replacement of Carrara marble. They represented Agriculture, Astronomy, Navigation and Industry. The 4 of them, are in front of the Basilica of San Francisco, in the street Defensa and Alsina.

3 – They worked in the Pyramid Francisco Cañete and Pridiliano Pueyrredon.

4 – The Pyramid was not always in the center. It was relocated in this place since 1912. This one was in front of the Cathedral of Buenos Aires. In front of the Metropolitan Cathedral.

5 – In 1824 it was possible to illuminate the pyramid with light thanks to a gas pump. Today it is illuminated with LED light.

6 – The white and circular painting that surrounds the monument represents the mothers of Plaza de Mayo. They circled the monument, walking incessantly asking for their children and grandchildren who disappeared during the last military dictatorship. Today they continue walking around the Pyramid remembering and asking for their missing relatives.
